Another GREAT week in Aspen

Another great week... work was fine and demanding but good and so much easier in off season.  Had the last Sign Language Class at the Deaf Camp on Tues night after work and it was very fun, then met with Shinta to arrange her baby shower during lunch when at work on Wed and some good lectures Tues am and Wed pm, Fri went and joined a friend at the great outdoor/adventure 5 points movie festival down in Carbondale and went back down to Carbondale on Sat to the "weiner" party (bottom pix) at which all kinds of weiners were eaten (not the one in the picture)... I am still vegan and Clifford was not happy with my offer of a vegie weiner but oh well... then this morning Clifford and I hiked about 3 miles up to American Lake which was awesome.  We are both recovering from doing more than half of it in the snow... A GREAT TIME!!!!  Saw the movie "Hungry for a Change" which was very good last night and today am catching up on things... it actually is the 8th anniversary of moving into my home so arranged for our steps to be fixed outside and paid $ to get the wood re-stained as a plan to honor this amazing home.  Hope you all are doing great.  Lots of love

Stuck in Fiji!

Fiji Trip…
Day 1… Aspen to LA with long stop over so went to the
Beverly Hot Springs. Had an awesome
scrub experience where EVERYTHING was scrubbed (and I mean 98% of my body)…
Bizarre. Then had a nice lunch in a cool
local area of LA and then back to the airport.
Tried to get in the VIP lounges but no such luck. After 10 hours plus on the plane we were in
Fiji. We got picked up by a bus driver
and driven Sri Lankan style (“if there is empty road, use it regardless of what
side it is on or which way you are going… at high speeds of course”) and after
about 2 hours got to the boat to Beqa which took another hour. Then orientation, lunch, testing of scuba
gear in the pool, short nap, massage, lecture and then dinner and SLEEP!...
Nice folks from ER/OB/FP/Peds/Radiology/General surgery/Derm/anesthesia etc
Day 2… Dive x 2 with questionable visibility but coral and
fish were nice… the first time made me nervous and my weights fell off on both
dives affecting my buoyancy but overall it was ok… then back for lunch,
explored a little, lecture, dinner listening to a local choir which was
excellent and then bed…
Day 3… 2 dives… the first was calm with better visibility
than the day before but the second was choppy.
On the second were beautiful coral etc but a heck of a current… saw
shark, sea cucumber etc… Excellent lunch, shower, coconut demo (with weaving
and eating etc) then the lecture (on river medicine etc) then dinner being
serenaded by a local band and then bed…
Day 4… SUPERB 4 hour hike with Vashali up to the top of the
island… tons of bushwhacking with Blackie our guide and his 4 dogs to chase off
the wart hogs… twas awesome.
Hot/fun/dirty/crazy and beautiful… totona wanawalu sengalalenga
(awesome, fun, no worries) J…
back for a good lunch after stopping at Blackie’s house for tea and meeting his
family in a local village then sea kayaking (saw blue starfish and pink coral),
lecture, dinner and bed again… more anon!!!
Day 5… 2 dives in am… saw huge star fish, lion fish, unicorn
fish, 2 huge clams chomping on small fish, WRECK dive… was with the fish and
then the guide pulled us away to this desolate area and I was bumming until
“movie style” this huge ship comes into view… twas really cool and would have
made a great “fade in” in the movies.
Then shower, lunch, waterfall hike, fire walking demo, lecture x 2
hours, dinner and then a Kava ceremony.
THEN BED AGAIN… ** trying to decide whether to do an around the island
jet ski tour or go diving the last day before our last day here when we can’t
dive (which instead will consist of a river trip in the jungle and then a
goodbye ceremony at the resort)… hmmm decisions, decisions…
Day 6… decided not to jet ski so had 2 nice dives… one
called finding Nemo where you are in the middle of multiple schools o fish and
then another boat dive with great corral and fish. Bridget went on the jet ski ride which she
really liked… after lunch went on a “village trip” and met the chief of the
Island and “shopped” local goods. Got
back late for the final lecture but that was enjoyable and then went to
dinner. Came back to the room to pack up for the river trip EARLY in the am.
Day 7… change of plans Fiji style. Got woken around 4:30am to have breakfast at
5am and then get on the boat at 5:30am to go to the mainland and then be bussed
to our river trip. Twas pouring rain
when we woke up so all were a little nervous about the ocean crossing. We were all still waiting for the boat at
5:45am when we were told the river trip had been cancelled since the road to it
had likely been washed out in the downpour.
SO back to bed for me to wake up leisurely and late. It is still raining so here I am writing this. My plan for the day is DO NOTHING this
morning and then try to wade through the river building up outside our rooms, go
over for lunch and then watch a cooking demo (I was going to miss and was
bummed to miss but now I get to go), get a massage, have dinner, have a closing
ceremony event with local musicians and the choir and then pack and get ready
for the LONG travel home which will consist of boat ride for 1.5 hours ish, bus
ride for that long and then hang out in Nadi for our flight. The company is dropping us off at a hotel to
drop our luggage and then some of us will try to go to the Orchid farm while
others shop. I hope to go to the Orchid
farm.
Day 8… well, change of plans… basically who knows how many
more days of this I will be writing.
Unfortunately there is a huge monsoon preventing any domestic or
international travel in/out of Fiji so we are stuck in Beqa for now with no
clue of if/when we will get out. The
bridge to the airport is flooded, there is no news about when/how we will get
out and all sea planes, boats, planes, buses etc are grounded until further
notice. HMMMMMM… ughh… yuck… I spent about an hour picking up garbage and
then watched the movie Albert Nobbs which was good but not a lot of news that
is good about getting out of here…. The pictures from the main island are
horrible (luckily we are fairly safe) but I am not doing well emotionally with
this and poor Bridget has a family emergency she can’t deal with from here.
Day 9… thought about trying to get to the main land and Suva
to another hotel and domestic airport but changed our minds when the sea got
rougher and then later found out Suva airport was likely flooded too etc etc
etc… tis very frustrating since we aren’t getting any accurate information and
then the internet went out isolating us even more… I am not good at this
Day 10… stuck again… tried to get a helicopter out but no
luck, no way to get a speed boat to pick us up since the airport is isolated
and the only way to get to it now is by air since all the roads to it are
blocked off/destroyed… winds/rain were up and lots of debris around… spent the
day walking the stairs near my room with coconuts in my hands for weights,
watching a movie “wild hogs”, doing an exercise tape, doing a puzzle and just
being frustrated
Day 11… this day started the same as yesterday… kept getting
put off re the helicopter, no boats etc… did clean the beach with the Fijians
since there was debris everywhere and just when we thought we would be there
another 3-4 days due to another cyclone we were told the road to the airport
was open SO mobilized, got on a boat for 1.5 hours (with dolphins swimming with
us) and then the van for 2.5 hours and got to the airport after going over 52
bridges (2 were friggen scary) then driving through water a few times, seeing
chairs on roofs, dead animals on the side of the road etc. Made it to the airport as all the flights were
cancelled due to cyclone Daphne was about to hit, got confirmed on a flight
tomorrow (if it isn’t cancelled) and went to a hotel by the airport. The winds and rain are up again but we are
safe and although I highly doubt we will get out tomorrow at least we are a
little closer to our destination. Ughhh…
can’t wait for this mis-adventure to end!
